At McDonald’s we do a lot more than serve delicious moment of love, we believe in giving back to our communities by partnering with them and working together in finding solutions to the challenges we all face.
With close to 400 restaurants spread across South Africa, we have a unique connection with communities and this scale comes with a responsibility to help support and empower people in meaningful ways through initiatives focused on literacy and education, farming and sustainability, computer and technology skills, and many others.
In times of disaster we are privileged as a nation to come together and help those affected by disasters that may befall our communities such as floods, or water scarcity due to drought.

Ronald McDonald
House Charities®
Meet our Ronald McDonald House Charities®, the hands that help families stay together when critically-ill or injured children receive treatment at the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital. Through the RMHC, parents and guardians are offered accommodation at the Ronald McDonald House near the hospital, to help them see their children whenever they need to. As the charity celebrates a major 10-year anniversary milestone, a new lactation centre at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital was unveiled.
The lactation centre at Baragwanath Hospital provides a private, comfortable, and supportive environment for mothers to express milk. They are provided with a comfortable seat as well as a breast pump for the duration of their lactation session. An experienced lactation nurse is also present to assist mothers who are struggling to express. This programme reaffirms the dedication to the well-being of the entire family. The upgrades to the Family Rooms and the introduction of the Lactation Centre have been designed with the needs of families in mind. From comfortable seating to private areas for rest and rejuvenation, every detail has been carefully considered to create a welcoming and supportive environment. These spaces are more than just rooms; they are sanctuaries where mothers can find peace and strength.
McDonald’s supports RMHC through partnering with suppliers, customers and staff, funding and customer donations. For every happy meal purchased, 50 cents automatically goes towards RMHC; and we also encourage our customers to donate R5 to RMHC whenever they purchase their meals.

These schools educate and sow the seeds of self-sufficiency and business acumen in young minds. This does not only happen on the field, but in Life Orientation lessons as well.

Book Donations
McDonald’s partners with schools through our Book Donations. A programme that encourages customers to offer a helping hand by donating pre-loved children’s books in restaurants and a partnering restaurant donates books within their community. Moreover, we donate our ‘Happy Readers’ books yearly, encouraging children to read more as we donate to communities that are only too happy to receive them and love to learn.
